2020 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge: Home Edition- Full Assignment

GENRE:  Documentary Short

2020 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge: Home Edition

Assignment:  Documentary short. The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge: Home Edition is a narrative short film competition. Because our film challenge participants are currently staying home and safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the genre of the assignment is documentary.  The theme of the documentaries should involve disability in some way.

Special Note:  Each film must have someone with a disability in front of or behind the camera. The entire production must be filmed from your or your talent’s house/property.  All participants must follow the social distancing and COVID-19 restriction guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/social-distancing.html or will not be eligible for competition. (See the rules for details.)

Assignment ThemeTell your story. What does disability mean to you?  Were you born with a disability?  Did you join the disability population later in life?  Were there defining moments in your own, your family, friends or your subject’s life? What has the journey been? Showcase disability culture and experience, how it is evolving? Has anything surprised you?  What unexpected things have come from it?  Do not be afraid to think outside the box or push the boundaries and expectations of a traditional documentary.  Feel free to use humor if it fits into your story or to do something unexpected.

Required Props: a blue shirt, a photograph, hand sanitizer or hand wipes, something that tells time or the date (a clock, newspaper, calendar, etc.) Each film must feature one of these props so that we know the film was made during our challenge dates.

Photos and Video Use: Personal photos and video that you have the rights to can be used.  Archival footage can only be used if you can prove you have rights.

Duration: All films must be between 1-5 minutes in length, not including the credits. If the addition of the credits puts the film over 5 minutes, that is acceptable, however films cannot exceed 6 minutes.

Submission Deadline: All entries must be uploaded as downloadable Vimeo files and linked to FilmFreeway, or uploaded to FilmFreeway directly by 9 p.m. EST / 6 p.m. PST on Sunday, July 19th, 2020. Winners will be announced on or before Thursday, August 13th, 2020.
